Legendary Japanese taiko drummer, YMO co-founder and music producer Yukihiro Takahashi passed away at 5:59 am on January 11th. he was 70 years old.
According to the announcement by his office, Takahashi was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the summer of 2020, and was undergoing rehabilitation while repeatedly being hospitalized after surgery.
He had been recuperating at home since November, but his health deteriorated at the end of the year and he died of aspiration pneumonia caused by a brain disease.
Takahashi was born in Tokyo in 1952. He started working as a studio musician in high school, and after performing with the Sadistic Mika Band, formed the Yellow Magic Orchestra with Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1978.
As a solo artist, he has released 23 original albums on Sarabah. Besides his solo activities, he has performed with Keiichi Suzuki in The Beatniks, Hosono in Sketch Show, Tomoyo Harada and Hiroshi Takano in pupa. He is also known as a fashion designer.
A special concert commemorating Takahashi’s 50th birthday was held in September last year, but Takahashi, who was scheduled to appear, was unable to perform due to illness.
