A question that has plagued fashion lovers for years – what is that little seemingly useless metal stud at the edge of your jeans pocket?
And the real answer is much more complicated than expected.

On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss (a Bavarian-born clothing merchant who left for San Francisco) and tailor Jacob Davis patented the design.
The idea first came to Jacob when a worker’s wife asked him to make trousers that would not fall apart.
Rivets, he reasoned, would help hold clothing together at “points of stress, such as the corners of pockets and the base of button fly,” the jeans maker said.
Jacob, a reliable and successful businessman, reached out to Levi’s, who purchased the fabric to make the pants in question, for a reliable project partner.

“Also, to punish getting the laundry out of the dryer too early,” added another.
