Atlanta — Tyler Perry Studios in southwestern Atlanta could expand to include an all-new entertainment district.

The 12 soundstage studio now comprises over 300 acres on the old grounds of Fort McPherson.

The 37-acre land deed was just sold to Tyler Perry Studios in late December for $8.4 million, according to Fulton County real estate records.
Lauren Sekinger, who lives near the property, told Washington she supports the expansion.
“Overall, it would be nice to have other options here,” she said.
The Atlanta City Council has provided a Channel 2 rendering of the planned expansion showing the potential for an entertainment district that Perry has been discussing for years.
In 2020, Perry said he wants to use the land to build a district with retail stores and restaurants.

Gregory Davney owns D&D Barbecue down the street from Tyler Perry Studios. He says he’s already gotten additional business from the studio’s cast and crew, but he’s looking forward to bringing more customers to the area.
“They come in and patronize some actors and actresses,” Dabney said.
The director of the Georgia Film Board issued a statement on Friday, read part of it.
“This expansion by Tyler Perry Studios, coupled with other recent sound stage announcements, quickly positions Georgia to offer the highest square footage of stage space in the United States.”
Washington has learned that the Fort McPherson Rural Redevelopment Authority has approved the sale for 2021.
