After being discontinued in 2021 due to cost issues, the popular service is back with a new model.

Good news for movie and free entertainment lovers. The Philadelphia Free Library has reinstated cardholder access to his Kanopy.
The library’s system-wide subscription to film and TV streaming platforms gives cardholders unlimited access to a collection of over 3,000 titles from the comfort of their home, including documentaries, Oscar-winning films, international films and children’s entertainment can be streamed to Service was restored and operational as of Tuesday.
“We are very excited to reopen access to Kanopy,” said Kelly Richards, Free Library Director, in a press release. “This is a popular service with many of our patrons and has added another way for Philadelphia people to access the free library from the comfort of their own home.”
The library system discontinued access to Kanopy in summer 2021, citing its high cost relative to the number of people who used it. The library also dropped Hoopla, a platform that provides access not only to movies and TV, but other types of media such as audiobooks, e-books, music, and comics. Between 2,000 and 7,000 regular customers used his two services each month.
The total cost of the Canopy and Hoopla for fiscal 2022 would have been $500,000 had they continued, and it would make more sense to direct that money toward physical materials, library officials said. I’m here.
But Kanopy PLUS, an unlimited public library subscription, a new service launched last September, has changed that.
Previously, the cost of streaming services was based on the number of streams, which was “unsustainable and unpredictable,” according to the library’s press release. The library costs for each stream will range from $0.99 to $4.99 for him in 2021, the interim director of the Free Library told Billy Penn.
The new Kanopy model offers public libraries a flat fee based on annual circulation, allowing patrons to stream an unlimited amount of material.
However, there are no plans to bring Hoopla back. Prices remain high.
“Our materials management team is constantly investigating products and services, both old and new, especially those that offer set-price models. You can,” said Kalosy.
