Martin Luther King Jr. Day is scheduled for Monday, January 16, but events celebrating the life and influence of the civil rights leader continue throughout the rest of the month. The university makes his MLK Day an official university holiday for the first time.
In addition to having no classes on Monday, Penn State University will host a variety of events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his accomplishments. The theme for his MLK Anniversary Week in 2023 is “A Testament of Hope: #ForTheCulture.”
Pennsylvania State University World Campus MLK Jr. Days of Service: January 14th and 15th
Penn State World Campus Student Affairs hosts multiple service-related events across the country. An onsite event will be held on January 14th in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. Silver Spring, Maryland. Manville, New Jersey. and Tampa, Florida. An onsite event will be held in Philadelphia on January 15th.

Continuing His Legacy: Day of Service: January 16, 10am to 3pm
The MLK Student Committee is leading this year’s Day of Service, which begins in the HUB’s Alumni Hall. The day begins with a welcome and breakfast followed by various service projects. After the day of worship, we will reflect over lunch.can register here.
Prose, Poetry and Performance Tribute Evening: January 17, 6-8pm
A variety of performances will be held in Room 008 at the HUB in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and “This Nation’s Fight for Freedom, Justice and Racial Equality.” The event is free and open to the public.
March for Peace: January 18th at noon
The community is invited to take a quiet walk from HUB’s Paul Robeson Cultural Center to MLK Junior Plaza on South Fraser Street in Old Main.

Guest speaker Orlena Nwokah Blanchard will lead a discussion at HUB’s Freeman Auditorium on the Crown Act, a law against racism in relation to hairstyles.
Mwenso and Shakes’ “Night Is the Right Time”: January 19, 9 p.m.
Join Michael Mwenso and other Black Roots artists, Shakes, for a concert that brings jazz, blues, African and African-American music to Penn State University. mwenso and shakes We will perform at HUB’s Heritage Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
Choral Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King: January 21st at 4pm
Penn State’s Essence of Joy, State College Area Master Singers, Bellefonte Area High School Concert Choir, Morgan State University Concert Choir, Mwenso and The Shakes performed at the Eisenhower Auditorium, “African and African-American Musical Idioms” Featuring choral music.
