Philadelphia (WPVI) — In 2012, Opera Philadelphia wowed crowds with a pop-up performance of “O Fortuna” from “Carmina Burana” at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station.
Ten years later, the opera is presenting “Carmina Burana + Credo” for the winter concerts at the Academy of Music.
said Frank Luzi, vice president of Opera Philadelphia. “Our stage is filled with musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra of Opera and singers from the Philadelphia Choir of Opera.
In recent years, Opera Philadelphia has been “exploring large-scale concert performances,” says Luzi.
Opera has selected two productions that spotlight local artists.
The famous song “Carmina Burana” is played along with a 20-minute piece called “Credo” by Margaret Bonds.
“It’s about a 90 minute concert,” says Luzi.
Singers include soprano Brandy Sutton, tenor Alasdair Kent and baritone Ethan Vincent.
They have performed with many singers of the Opera Philadelphia Choir and Orchestra.
“Our local Philadelphia singers and musicians sometimes play background roles in opera, but now they’re front and center,” Rouge says.
Colombian-born Lina Gonzalez Granados will guest conduct.
“It will be my first concert at the Academy of Music,” says Gonzales Granados. “And Opera is so excited to collaborate with Philadelphia.”
“Opera has many elements, but the core is always music,” says Luzi.
“Carmina Burana” is a song that González Granados describes as “a lot of fun” to play.
She says it’s really about “human nature.”
It is a large-scale production with over 100 soloists, choirs and musicians on stage.
“What we hear should be representative of all segments of society,” said Gonzalez Granados, adding that it would be “a very interesting musical experience.”
