This year marks the 15th year of the Vann Vocal Institute. The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra is pleased to welcome the world-famous opera singer back to Montgomery for free public enjoyment. David Cangelosi, an internationally acclaimed operatic tenor and his director of the Institute of Arts and Programs, will join Wilson in his Auditorium at the Montgomery Museum of Art on Thursday, January 26 at 7:00 p.m. Guest arranged his artist all-star his collection. For the Van Vocal Institute’s Gala Celebrity Recital. This recital runs without intermission and showcases blockbuster hits from opera, art his songs, musical theater, and a few surprises. The concert is free and open to the public.
In addition to Cangelosi, opera stars include: Grammy Award-winning soprano Kelly See Hogan. Mezzo-soprano Maya Lahyani was the first Israeli born to sing on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. Matinee idol and fine-voiced tenor Derek Taylor. And up-and-coming superstar Kevin Thompson on bass.
Rounding out the celebrity cast is conductor Stephen Crawford, whose accolades include numerous performances at the Metropolitan Opera. Dr. Christopher Sanchuk, Pianist/Vocal Coach at Alabama State University. And Roger Pines, world-renowned opera dramaturge and lecturer, wowed audiences with his knowledge of the Opera His Quiz, the long-running program of the Metropolitan His Opera Station.
Each year the Van Vocal Institute invites internationally renowned opera singers, vocal coaches and pianists to Montgomery for two days of intensive masterclasses and tutoring for select singers aged 18-29. He also serves as a faculty member of the Institute. In honor of its 15th anniversary, Cangelosi arranged to distribute her $15,000 to students through scholarships and awards. A student vocal competition at the Wilson Auditorium (MMFA) on Saturday, January 28th at 5:00 pm will conclude the seminar and will include a grand prize of $7,500. Featuring the top 9 student vocalists as determined by the faculty.
