Whether it’s rock or rap music, Rick Rubin has historically been one of the most important influencers in both genres in the United States. The 59-year-old producer and executive co-founded Def Jam Recordings. He also founded American Recordings and is the former co-president of Columbia Records.

In the interview below, Cooper asks, “Do you play an instrument?”
“Barely,” Rubin says.
“Do you know how to operate the soundboard?” Cooper continues.
“No. I’m not technical. I know nothing about music,” Rubin says.
Cooper laughs. “You must know something.”
“Well, I know what I like and what I don’t like, and I’m decisive about what I like and don’t like,” Rubin adds.
“So what are you getting paid for,” continues Cooper.
“Having confidence in your taste and ability to express what you feel has proven beneficial for artists.”
