TikTok fans can now create viral videos with the soundtrack of the Arab world’s biggest pop stars.
As part of a new licensing deal between the social media platform and major label Rotana Music Group, TikTok users will be able to access Saudi-owned music featuring hits by regional superstars such as Elissa, Amir Diab, Naiwah Karam and Mohammed Abdo. These tracks were previously unavailable and unauthorized uploads were swiftly removed from the platform.
Salem Al Hendi, chief executive of Rotana Music Group, said the move would reveal to the world the vibrant music scene in the Middle East and North Africa.
“We at Rotana are very excited about this licensing deal as it will help Arab music penetrate the Mena music industry and the younger community,” he said.
“Mena’s creative culture is extremely vibrant and diverse and this deal will enhance the exchange of musical content while promoting and supporting local artists on a proven leading platform for short video.”
Hair Nair, head of music for the Middle East at TikTok, said the deal will increase the diversity of the music catalog for content creators to choose from.
“As TikTok continues to grow in the Middle East and North Africa and become a cultural force in the region, we are delighted to bring the largest independent catalog to our platform,” he said.
“TikTok is committed to licensing and ensuring a wide variety of sounds in our library for our global community to enjoy.”
