According to a report in About Manoramaout of 176 releases in Malayalam, only 17 films turned out to be box office successes, profiting their creators.

This meant that 90% of the releases failed, resulting in a combined loss of Rs 325 crore.
Out of these 17 successes, there were 8 films that grossed over Rs.
