Kim Kardashian added a piece of royal history to her jewelery collection after purchasing the Ataler Cross, once owned by the late Princess Diana. The reality star and businesswoman bought the jewel for her £163,800 at Sotheby’s Royal and Noble auction in London.
This pendant was first created in the 1920s by court jeweler Garrard. More than 60 years later, Diana attended Birthlight’s charity gala in October 1987 in a Catherine Walker dress.
The Atala Cross is bold and colorful. Square-cut amethysts and circular-cut diamonds combine to form distinctive floral details.
The necklace was purchased in the 1980s by businessman Naim Attallah, who regularly loaned the pieces to Princess Diana to wear as she was a good friend. Ataler Her cross was only worn by a princess and was never seen in public after her death until this Sotheby’s auction.
Christian Spofors, Sotheby’s Head of Jewelery at Sotheby’s London, said: “Its size, color and style make it a bold piece of jewellery, one that inspires, whether in faith or fashion or both. “We are delighted that this work has breathed new life into the hands of another world-famous name.”
This particular piece represents a key point in Diana’s life, as it allowed her to express herself more confidently in her own personal style.
“Jewelry owned or worn by the late Princess Diana rarely comes to market, especially pieces like the Atala Cross, which is so colorful, bold and unique,” explains Spofors. “This whimsical pendant is somewhat symbolic of the princess’ growing confidence in her choice of clothing and jewelry at certain moments in her life.”
This isn’t the first time Kardashian has shown her love for fashion history. At the 2020 Academy Awards afterparty, she wore one of the most iconic gowns ever made, an Alexander McQueen Oyster dress gifted to her by then-husband Kanye West. And last year, she walked the red carpet at the Met Gala in a Marilyn Monroe Jean-Louis Crystal gown, “Happy Birthday Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy in 1962. famous for singing
