Best of 2022 is ComingSoon’s week-long The entertainment that made this year so memorable.
Well, kids, 2022 is now in your rearview mirror. I have to say that the year pretty much delivered when it came to pop culture entertainment. obi wan kenobi, Anyone? —but we’ve also received some genuine classics in nearly every medium.
Without further ado, here are my favorite movies, TV shows, books, CDs, and video games released in 2022.
Avatar: Path of Water
It took 12 years, but James Cameron finally unleashed his long-awaited follow-up in 2009 Avataroops boy, road of water It is an awe-inspiring cinematic achievement of the highest order. Retains some of its predecessor’s weaker sides — read: simplistic story, silly dialogue — visuals and action are better than League, easily beating out anything that hits Cineplex this year. , this is a phenomenal movie at its best. It’s a visual tour de force with heart-pounding action, tear-jerking drama, and some of the most amazing visual effects we’ve ever seen. road of water is my favorite movie of the year, regardless of age. A tribute to composer Simon Franglen who branched out in unexpected new directions while retaining James Horner’s iconic score.
God of War: Ragnarok
forget Thor: Love and Thunder; the true battle with the Norse gods is God of War: Ragnarok, delivers one of the most thrilling video game experiences ever produced. While deepening the character and mythology, following the same beat as the previous work, Ragnarok is a gritty human drama wrapped up in a colossal blockbuster filled with incredible sets, strong dialogue, and visual brilliance. He’s bound to be one of the greatest video game sequels of all time.
Heat 2 (audiobook)
I’ve listened to a lot of audiobooks this year, but none have been this exciting. heat 2Written by Michael Mann and narrated to dramatic perfection by Peter Giles (whose voice makes even the most trivial scenes feel epic), this story is the original 1995 classic. heat It suspends and expands on the characters portrayed by Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer in unique and evocative ways. I was already over the moon about the planned movie, and the audiobook heightened my excitement.
Top Gun: Maverick
Great fireball! Tom Cruise continues to provide audiences with the spectacle that took the market by storm in the 80’s and his early 90’s.in the meantime Top Gun: Maverick Designed with incredible practical effects and certainly looks like a modern action movie, this picture shows that the need for speed trumps all others. , feels like a throwback to simpler times. top gun Prove that audiences will rally in droves as long as you show them a good time.
Batman
Dark, moody, incredibly dark, Matt Reeves’ Batman It stands as one of the best adaptations of the pointy-eared hero so far. Sevenbut the presentation nails the look and feel of the Caped Crusader like never before. Batman The graphic novel comes to life and sets the stage for a thrilling new big-screen comic universe.
All at once, anywhere
A24, though highly original content, continues to be weird and disappointing, hitting a home run. All at once, anywhere — perhaps the most original film to hit the big screen. It features great turns by Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and scene stealer girlfriend Stephanie Hsu, and great direction by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. EEAAO Not only does it deliver the goods in terms of spectacle (for half the price of the usual Marvel fare), it also offers a fascinating commentary on modern families and the eternal struggle between old and new. There’s a great movie that deserves it.
Andor – Season 1
To be honest, it took me a while to get in. AndorI enjoyed the first three or so episodes, but decided to wait until the entire series came to Disney+ before jumping into Cassian Andor’s further adventures.I’m glad I took the plunge Andor it’s the best Star Wars later releases rogue one – maybe empire strikes backShowrunner Tony Gilroy wisely grounded his actions and characters, obi wan kenobi When boba fett book Instead, it offers audiences a thrilling character study more concerned with political intrigue than poorly rendered action. At this point, I tell Gilroy to give me the keys to the kingdom.
House of the Dragon – Season 1
No TV show gets more attention each week House of the DragonDark, captivating, full of political intrigue, engaging characters and intense violence. game of thrones The spin-off pulls George RR Martin’s defunct franchise out of the trash. House of the Dragon Make Dragons and Targaryens relevant again. Admittedly, the huge time gap took some getting used to, and season 1 didn’t pay off much, but count me for the continued adventures of this bat-shit-obsessed House Targaryen.
norseman
Has there ever been a more brazen, stranger, rawer film than this? norsemanWhile certainly not the most original film ever released, this Robert Eggers production ranks as one of the most ambitious big-budget productions in recent memory.? Eggers spent a great deal of time and money transporting audiences to the past, and the results did not disappoint. Hmm.
Amistad Extended Score
La La Land Records spoiled film score fans a lot this year with great releases such as James Horner’s Extended Score. Field of Dreams When grinchalong with Horner’s extended/complete score re-release brave heartJerry Goldsmith Barbsby Danny Elfman spidermanand David Arnold’s tomorrow never die.
Still, my favorite was the extended release of Steven Spielberg’s John Williams’ Almost Forgotten Score AmistadDarker than your typical Williams album, Amistad Two and a half hours of beautiful music spread across two CDs delivers the goods. A must have for soundtrack collectors.
Better Call Saul – Final Season
final chapter of Better Call Saul Offered everything I wanted and then some. Backed by stellar performances from Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn, creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould delivered a slow-burn character drama that’s equal parts harrowing and heartbreaking. breaking bad. Better Call Saul It’s worth mentioning among the greatest TV shows of all time.
