W.Should you wear a hat when no one sees you? Spoiler alert: The answer is not “who cares”. It’s hibernation month, but you can still be in fashion. Until further notice, evening wear is being redefined not as a way to shine at a party, but as what you wear when bingeing the boxes set on your couch. Aspirations make staying home feel like the path of least resistance.
This kind of evening wear can be as glamorous as its own frocks and jewels. It doesn’t mean you have to. I see no logic in making this time already depressing by wearing the oldest tracksuit bottoms and bobbly jumpers. No need to throw it away. Alone time can be a reward, but only if you treat it as one.
In other words, 10% more Gwyneth Paltrow. Consider what you wear to stay at home as a form of self-care. Lean into the comforts of home and wear what makes your nights on the couch the most enjoyable. Stretch and ease of use come first. The fabric should be soft and malleable. Whether you’re tucking your feet down on the couch, resting your feet on the coffee table, or doing yoga poses and pretzels on the carpet.
Let’s break this down. Instead of hiding under a bulky jumper, start with a light layer that covers as much of your body as possible. The goal is not just to prevent drafts, but to minimize the chances of drafts. The luxury of staying at home is that careful layering can silence the chill ghosts that have plagued us this winter more than most winters.
Leggings have fallen off trend with tracksuit bottoms in the bottom half of mass athleisure rankings, but leggings are ideal home wear and are comfortable without being bulky. Leggings have no pockets and may feel exposed in public, but at home they are perfect.
A long-sleeved T-shirt or full-length winter clothing is required for the top half. You should have plenty of overlap with your leggings. The purpose is that you don’t have to pull anything up and down to keep the cold at bay. Cold wrists don’t really feel warm.
Once you have a clean base layer, add something plush or chunky on top. Long cardigans, hoodies, half zips. It might be a sweater dress.
What you wear should suit your self-image, not your silhouette. You can think of it as time to wrap yourself in something soft and recharge your batteries. This is why reaching for pajamas and gowns is not the answer. Because the whole point of hibernation wear is not just to kill time until lights out, but to actively embrace life at home.
Couches and Netflix subscriptions are Saturday night dates for now.And the dress code is what makes you feel absolutely amazing.
