If it wasn’t clear that the Houston Texans were the worst team in the NFL, their 31-3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the home finale on Sunday proved it.
The crushing loss not only marked the Jaguars’ first loss since December 2017, but also meant they were swept out of their home field by their opponents, failing to win a single game at NRG Stadium, 0-7-1. .
It was never near. It was embarrassing.
And if the franchise is serious about getting back into competition, it should make a big difference.
But that’s a conversation for another occasion.
For now, the focus is on what went wrong on Sunday, and the list is extensive.
First and foremost, the Texans’ defense was an absolute mess, allowing Jacksonville a total of 337 yards offense, including 108 yards and a touchdown on nine carries from Tavis Etienne.
And the final deficit could have been worse had it not been for the two turnovers forced by the defense.
Meanwhile, offensively, so did the Texans, who went outside the end zone for the second time this season.
Quarterback Davis Mills was again erratic and inconsistent, and the run game minus rookie Dameon Pierce was a notorious disaster.
In fact, Mills ultimately finished the game as the team’s leading rusher with 33 yards on four carries.
With the loss, the Texans are currently sitting 2-13-1 with just one week left to officially secure the No. 1 pick in this spring’s NFL Draft.
That game will be against the team the Texans tied in Week 1, the Indianapolis Colts.
Kickoff is scheduled for next Sunday at noon at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
