From Oprah Winfrey’s gift guide to Reese Witherspoon’s book list, celebrity endorsements can be considered gospel.As usual this season, former President Barack Obama He has blessed us with his own gospel: his favorite song of the year.
The 25-song list spans all genres: R&B, reggaeton, rap, country, indie, pop, and more. Almost certainly less than half the artists on the list are considered “mainstream”. Some have speculated that the former president may have compiled the list himself. However, I’m guessing Sasha and Malia were the source of some, but I think these were really Obama’s choices.
Obama’s playlists aren’t just usually a look at private celebrity tastes, they’re also oddly to-the-point, ordinary good music compilations. Having listened to an unhealthy amount of music in 2022, I’m somehow qualified as a good judge of the former Supreme Commander’s picks, and to compress the list of 25 songs, the most notable I chose the song that should be.
The album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is Kendrick Lamar at his best.Pulitzer Prize Winner — earned well with his cultural giant, “DAMN.” 2017 —here we tackle the cancer system, drug use, and canceling culture. Kendrick’s bar hits hardest in a punchy, breathtaking style with heavy 808 drum beats and synths.
With “Tití Me Preguntó,” it’s no surprise that Bad Bunny is on this list. The Puerto Rican powerhouse said she was the most streamed artist on Spotify in 2022. I attribute this to the universal power of the butt-shaking anthem. “Tití Me Preguntó” is a purely fun song, quickly rolling his lines like his “Novia” (girlfriend), as Bad Bunny elaborates in the song. My mother discovered this song before me and I was disappointed. I hope it’s inspired many dance parties at the Obama family, just like ours.
Another Spanish-language song on Obama’s list, ROSALÍA’s “SAOKO” has a similar dance-inducing quality but contains a grunge instrumental. On the track, the classically trained flamenco singer talks about her love of change, combining rhythmic, high-pitched vocals with low-pitched electronic bass. This theme is evident throughout the ‘Motomami’ album, in which ROSALÍA weaves flamenco, reggaeton, trap and more brilliantly. My favorite track on the album is the ballad ‘HENTAI’, with ROSALÍA’s crystal clear vocals that will bring you to tears, but ‘SAOKO’ definitely follows Liszt’s overall theme: high-energy bop. .
Interestingly for Twitter, one of President Obama’s favorites was Ethel Kane’s “American Teenager.” It’s a dreamy indie song critical of America’s institutions: the military. “My neighbor brother came home in a box, but he wanted to go, so maybe that was his fault,” Cain, 24, said of Obama’s military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Anyway, indie artist Apollo takes a break from the moody vibe of his album ‘Ivory’ with ‘Tamagotchi’ which is bouncy, seductive and bilingual in English and Spanish. But Apollo and his falsetto seem to shine brightest on tracks with heart-wrenching, soft accompaniments like “Evergreen” and “Invincible.” Similarly, SZA’s return to music following 2017’s moody masterpiece “Ctrl.” On the album “SOS” it was most prominent in her saddest track. “Shirt” may have inspired many of her TikTok dances, but “Nobody Gets Me” and “Ghost in the Machine” are her SZA’s most hurtful, well-made tracks.
This year’s favorite songs are Wet Leg’s ‘Wet Dream’, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘N95’, Soccer Mommy’s ‘Shotgun’ and The Lumineers’ ‘Just Like Heaven’. Then, Mr. President, if you are looking for a ghostwriter next year, I will send you my rate.
