“I’ll be the medicine you want to swallow // When you’re looking for joy,” Damiano David muses on the punk-infused bass riff of “READ YOUR DIARY,” track 11 of Morneskin’s 17 tracks. This is very likely a lyric derived from any of the band’s many musical influences, including Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, and Arctic Monkeys.
But the musical foursome’s “Loud Kidz” style becomes very clear, with a wholly Italian-language song titled “MARK CHAPMAN,” named after John Lennon’s fame-seeking killer. . These two songs of his, like much of the album itself, successfully tie together the duality of Måneskin’s musical styles. His long-awaited third studio album was promoted and released under Columbia Records. The first musical influences are clear. The hour-long piece is a testament to the band’s unbridled stylistic breadth.
Following his 2021 televised victory at Eurovision, Måneskin was propelled into the chaotic world of mainstream rock, “Rock and Roll Circus” A persona that took the world by storm. As their popularity gained momentum in the United States, the band began to increase their lyrical focus on the American rock community, releasing their 2017 debut his semi-cover album “Chosen.”
With over three quarters of the “Hurry Up!” album being sung in that language, it’s arguably the most English-heavy album ever. Fans in Europe and elsewhere alike have expressed concern over the band’s withdrawal from their linguistic origins. However, the band maintains its Italian charm in the form of its members’ quirky stage presence and outspoken personalities through tours and TV interviews.
In Måneskin’s interview with Spotify about the album and its influence, lead singer Damiano David shared his thoughts on the record’s general meaning: was described as a “journey” and achieved worldwide fame for songs composed at every point on the track. These include tracks like ‘COOL KIDZ’, ‘MAMMAMIA’ and ‘BLA BLA BLA’ written at the height of their emotional climax following their ‘Eurovision’ win. Both react to the pressures and stresses that come with a propelled career.
In addition, bassist Vic de Angelis proved the musical freedom offered during composition and recording. “I really like it when you feel free […] Don’t follow the rules and schemes of the writing process,” De Angelis told Spotify.
Surprisingly, the album is either overproduced or overly conforming in places. The Rock’s ballad, “IF NOT FOR YOU,” features a heavy, Nirvana-esque intro that evokes a somewhat overdone style by producer Max Martin (Taylor Swift, Katy Perry) and a series of producers that rotate throughout the record. The production aspect is obvious. The large cast of musical contributors can also be a source of relative unpredictability between tracks.
But fragility is what makes listening fun, right? As experienced listeners of the band’s previous records, it seems to me that the new album is going “trendy” while trying to offer the quirky musical style that they have become known for.
Måneskin’s career-changing turning point went from covering American rock to inspiring it. The album seems to be a unique homage to their experience in charge of the current music scene. Each song adds something new to the band’s ever-changing discography and is sure to entertain him on his upcoming world tours.
