Many touring acts and big shows kick off in New Orleans in February. Until then, here are the highlights from a relatively quiet week in January.
Billy Iuso’s Birthday Bash
Thursday, Tipitina
After spending the 1980s deeply immersed in the Grateful Dead, guitarist Billy Iuso began making his own music. His interest in Little Feat led him to New Orleans funk legend Mater. After Iuso’s Rhode Island-based funk/jam band Brides of Jesus opened his Funky Meters show, bassist George Porter Jr. suggested his Iuso move to New Orleans. bottom. he did Beginning in the late 1990s, he spent four years managing tours and stages for Funky He Meters, Neville Brothers, Porters He Running He Pardoners. In 2002, he formed the roots rock/jam band Billy Iuso & The Restless Natives. Iuso will celebrate his 54th birthday on the Tipitina stage on Thursday. Fellow guitarists Papa Mari and Mike Dusann, Big Chief’s Juan Pardo, keyboardist and singer John “Papa” Gross, and violinist and singer Rurik Nounan will be joining as guests. Showtime is 9pm and tickets are $13 for him.
Dita Von Teese
Friday, Orpheum Theater
Dita Von Teese is one of the world’s most famous burlesque artists. At 50, she has been a striptease performer for over 30 years. Born Heather Sweet in Michigan, she turned her early fascination with 1940s movies, vintage Hollywood glamour, and fancy lingerie into an image that has since made her multifaceted career. . She has written books, amassed a sizable list of TV and film credits, and diversified into her own signature line of lingerie, makeup, perfumes, gins and other products, but with the utmost care. Her choreographed and styled live shows are still her calling card. Show off your routine. She kicked off her ‘Glamonatrix’ tour in 2019, but the pandemic put it on ice for two years.On her way home, she took ‘Glamonatrix’ to the Orpheum Her Theater on Friday at 7:30 p.m. I will come. Kari Allen Lee
Friday, George & Joyce Wine Jazz & Heritage Center
Jazz saxophonist Kari Allen Lee is a pioneer of the modern jazz scene in New Orleans. He leads his own New Orleans creative his collective, Delfeyo his Marsalis Uptown Jazz and is also his orchestral lead his saxophonist. He has shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Terrence Blanchard, Dr. John and many other celebrities. He has also been in the music departments of Loyola, UNO, and NOCCA, and is a Daniel F. Breeden Distinguished Scholar in the Arts and Humanities at his alma mater, Auburn University. Lee and his band play Friday at 8pm at the George and Joyce Wayne Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart St.). Admission is $10. The show is part of the non-profit New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Jazz & Heritage Concert Series. The series will wrap up Saturday at the Jazz & Heritage Center with an 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday shows will be streamed live at jazzandheritage.org/live.

Sunday, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro
A Berklee College of Music alumnus who grew up in the New York area, pianist Christokarski moved to New Orleans in 2011 and completed his master’s degree at the University of New Orleans. He soon fell in love with early jazz piano masters from New Orleans, Chicago, and New York, including Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines, James P. Johnson, and Teddy Wilson. His own style incorporates not only bebop, but also ragtime and other early jazz his piano style. In addition to leading his own groups, he is also a member of Hal Smith’s On the Levee Jazz Band, Riverside Jazz Collective and his Squirrel Nut Zippers in his band Pop. On Sundays, Tokarski has shows at his Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro at 8pm and 10pm. He will be joined by clarinetist Tim Laughlin, clarinetist and cornetist Andy Shum, and drummer Hal Smith. Tickets are $20.
