The Zac Brown Band has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards and won three.
In endorsing musicians for the honor, Brown University president Brendan B. Kelly said that Brown was “world famous with Georgian roots” and “an ideal candidate for an honorary degree.” I wrote.
“Conferring Mr. Brown’s degree will reinvigorate the sense of UWG pride he often shares on the world stage and further enhance the sense of belonging and connection we offer at our institution.” writes Kelly.
Regent also agreed to award country music artist Cole Swindell an honorary degree from Georgia Southern University. Swindell grew up in the small town of Bronwood, Georgia and is known for wearing clothes with her Georgia Southern logo. A school spokeswoman said he was a business student in the early 2000s.
Swindell has written dozens of hit songs for country music’s biggest acts. He also has many hits of his own, including “She Had Me At Heads Carolina” and “Chillin’ It.”
“Mr. Swindell’s public and consistent support for Georgia Southern has enhanced our national brand and exposure in ways we could never pay or earn on our own,” said President Kyle Marrero. is writing
Georgia Southern will award honorary degrees at its Spring Commencement Ceremony.
It is not uncommon for the university system to award honorary degrees to prominent music artists. The system last year approved Georgia State University’s request to award former student rapper/actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges an honorary bachelor’s degree.
