Once upon a time, I would have made a list of the best albums of 2022. At that time, I bought the album and listened to it. I still do, but it’s not the same for streaming services.
Musically, it’s the best of times, but more and more it’s coming back to my musical favourites. By the way, who could have predicted that one of his most interesting performers, livestreamed or in person, would be his 81-year-old Bob Dylan. But it was.
I wrote about Chania Rani, and many people have discovered and enjoyed it. If you haven’t seen her concert at Les Invalides yet, be sure to check it out.
Another recent discovery is drummer Makaya McRaven and his sublime new album In These Times (that is, at least one album I’ve listened to).
With that said, let me share the music and music sources I enjoyed the most in 2022.
Weekdays: Every morning from 9:00 to 12:00 on KCRW 89.9 FM, Morning Becomes Eclectic with DJs Novena Carmel and Anthony Valadez (who we recently introduced) and Music Director Anne Litt (who we introduced two years ago). I’m listening to (MBE). Their programming is available on terrestrial radio and online streaming. Thank you for your curation and your taste. Make my day!
On weekday afternoons, I listen to KCSN 88.5FM. It has been renamed “Social Sounds” (also available on terrestrial radio and online). Thanks to Julie Slater, Andy Chanley and Mookie.
Around 5pm, I switch to listening to Pandora from time to time. From Van Morrison and Bonnie Raitt radio, to James Booker, Kermit Ruffins, Dr. John, Little Feat and Leon Russell, I received dozens of stations on Pandora.
Weekends: Friday and Saturday nights, if I’m at home, I listen to WWOZ streaming as WWOZ.org in New Orleans. I especially like Soul Power and Peggy Lou from Soul Sister and Awake and Willing.
Saturday and Sunday morning till noon, I still have WWOZ on, from traditional New Orleans jazz, to Tiene Sabor’s signature Latin music program, to Cajun, Zydeco, Brazilian and American roots music. , listening to everything.
Around noon, go to KCRW or KCSN especially for Mimi Chen. And Saturday and Sunday afternoons are KJAZZ 88.1 FM and Gary “Wagman” Wagner’s “Nothin But the Blues”. Music that makes me happy whenever I can, from 2pm to 6pm on Saturdays and from 2pm to 7pm on Sundays. Thank you Wagman!
On the other hand, when I’m in my car, I’m probably listening to satellite radio, often Soul Shack on channel 49.
Having covered the basics, looking back at what I enjoyed most last year, I have to say that my guilt is that a great artist covered it.
For example, produced by Larry Klein It’s Here: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen I spent hours together. I have also written about Larkin Poe. From James Taylor to Eric Clapton to the Allman Brothers, their covers will last you a long time.
Speaking of the Brothers Allman, there’s a band I’ve known for a long time and even saw in concert a few times, but didn’t give them their due at first (it’s kind of on my part). I felt that their cover didn’t surpass the original).
I’m talking about the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and my opinion of them has changed 180 degrees. Hear the cover of the LAYLA REVISITED live album with Trey Attanasio – there are moments when the music soars and the musicians themselves seem transported. , and it’s great. Thanks to Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.
Joss Stone is not only a great cover artist, he has also undertaken a project called a world tour visiting over 200 countries (including sliding across the border to perform in Iran). You can watch performances with local artists from each region on YouTube. Thank you Joss Stone.
Another band that does unparalleled covers is Lake Street Dive. their original songs hypothesis These earworms are so delicious you won’t be able to get them out of your head. But all their covers, from Hall and Oates to The Kinks and Carole King, are just as good.
So to all DJs, music directors, producers, bands and musicians, I have one request for 2023.
