Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently opened up about his past as a heavy drinker. He said it was so serious that his ex-wife Aarti Bajaj kicked him out of the house when his daughter Aaliyah was about four years old. Anurag Kashyap started his career as a film screenwriter and made his directorial debut with Paanch. Due to censorship issues, the film was never released. He then directed Black Friday (2004), based on Hussein Zaidi’s book of the same name about the 1993 Bombay bombings. The film’s release was delayed until 2007 by the District Film Certification Board due to an incident. It received critical acclaim, followed by No Smoking (2007), which received negative reviews and failed at the box office.
Anurag rose to fame after the commercial and critical success of Dev.D in 2009. Reflecting on his bad phase in the film, Anurag recalled a time when he recently turned to alcohol to cope with the situation. As he tells his Mashable India: It’s over. I was a heavy drinker for a year and a half. Artie kicked me out of the house. My daughter (Aaliyah) was only 4 at the time. It was a difficult stage. I was depressed.

“Punch stalled, Black Friday stalled, Alwyn Kalicharan was shelved, another movie nobody knew about was shelved, I was kicked out of Tele Naam (2003) and Khante (2002). Was drinking and fighting all these battles I was suddenly kicked out of a project I wrote and was in. It was a very bad stage and built up in anger at the industry and the system ‘ he added.
Anurag’s last project was Dobaaraa starring Taapsee Pannu. He is currently gearing up for the release of his next project with DJ Mohabbat, Almost Pyaar, which will feature Alaya Fand Karan Mehta in the lead role. It also features Vicki Kaushal in a special cameo appearance. The film will be released in theaters on February 3rd.
