Lots of new movies with a wide range of styles coming out this week.
There are some Oscar-nominated performances from Bill Nighy and Hugh Jackman. There will be a standalone sequel about a missing mother. Plus, there’s Anna Kendrick’s drama about a woman in an abusive relationship. Then there’s Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut. And finally, there’s the animated film about Yuanshin from China who used to be a bounty hunter. It’s going to be a busy week at the cinema!
Here’s a full rundown of the new movies hitting theaters this week and on major streaming platforms.
New movies out this week: January 16, 2023 – January 22, 2023

Missing (2023)
evaluation: PG-13
release date: January 20, 2023 (Friday) at the National Theater.
overview: Absent The film follows June (Storm Reed), whose mother (Nia Long) has disappeared on vacation in Columbia with a new boyfriend (Ken Leung), and who is stranded in Los Angeles, thousands of miles away. It starts from where you are seeking with the means. to answer. The deeper her June digs, the more questions she asks, and she soon learns that June never knew her own mother.
Things to watch out for: This is a standalone sequel to the 2018 movie. Searchingstarring John Cho.
street language: Storm Reed’s first feature film role was as Emily in the 2013 Oscar-winning film. 12 years of slavery.
my take: I’m curious how this ties together Searchinga movie that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Living (2022)
evaluation: PG-13
release date: Coming to select theaters on Friday, January 20, 2023.
overview: life Set in 1950s London, Williams (Bill Nighy) has always prided himself on his work ethic, his attention to detail, and his refusal to say anything personal. After receiving shocking news, Williams seeks ways to improve his life and help those around him.
Things to watch out for: This is a remake of the classic 1952 Japanese film live Directed by legendary film director Akira Kurosawa.
street language: The National Board of Review named the film one of the top 10 independent films of 2022.
my take: I love how screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro pitched the movie to Bill Nighy in the taxi they shared after the party.

The Sun (2022)
evaluation: PG-13
release date: Coming to select theaters on Friday, January 20, 2023.
overview: of son, Peter (Hugh Jackman) and his partner Beth (Vanessa Kirby), when Peter’s first wife, Kate (Laura Dern), turned up with their teenage son Nicholas (Zenn McGrath). When struggling with a newborn baby. Kate runs out of ideas to help Nicholas, who is struggling with depression. She hopes Peter can contact him. Peter wants to be a better father than he was and find a way to help Nicholas.
Things to watch out for: This movie is a sequel to the 2020 movie fatherAnthony Hopkins will reprise his role in this film in a flashback sequence.
street language: The film is based on the play of the same name directed by Florian Zeller.
my take: It will be interesting to see if Hugh Jackman gets an Academy Award nomination for this role.

Alice, Darling (2022)
evaluation: R.
release date: January 20, 2023 (Fri) AMC Theaters exclusive screening.
overview: Alice, Darling It’s about a young woman (Anna Kendrick) in a potentially fatal abusive relationship, but she doesn’t want to see the warning signs. She tries to make her aware of that, but her boyfriend could show up unexpectedly and make her look ugly.
Things to watch out for: Actress Mary Nye’s feature film directorial debut (Marie Antoinette, tormented), daughter of actor Bill Nighy.
street language: The film currently holds an excellent 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been reviewed by over 20 film critics.
my take: I’ve been a fan of Anna Kendrick since her amazing performance in the 2009 movie Up in the Air.

New Gods: Yang Jian (2022)
evaluation: none
release date: January 20, 2023 (Friday) at the National Theater.
overview: in the movie New Gods: Yang JianYang Jiang was once an all-powerful god, but made a living as a bounty hunter after losing some of his powers in an ugly incident with his sister. A woman approaches Yang Jian with the task of finding and catching a young thief who stole her valuables from her. Yang Jian’s life is getting very complicated as the thief is someone he knows.
Things to watch out for: This is the latest entry in the New Gods universe by Chinese Light Chaser Animation Studios. This is the second in a series.The first movie was a 2020 movie New Gods: Nezha Reborn.
street language: The film won the Allywood Film Critics Association Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
my take: I’m definitely going to check this movie out because I love the animation I saw in the trailer.

If I could save the world (2022)
evaluation: R
release date: Coming to select theaters on Friday, January 20, 2023.
overview: After saving the world is about Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard), a teen who lives to make music for his online fans. Ziggy thinks he’s successful because so many fans follow him, but when he meets a fellow student named Laila (Alisha Boe) who sees something more in Ziggy, his The idea of happiness is changing. This is all while Ziggy’s mother (Julianne Moore) tries to help a teenager (Billy Brick) while working at a domestic abuse shelter.
Things to watch out for: A film written and directed by actor Jesse Eisenberg.
Words on the street: Finn Wolfhard is best known for his role as Mike Wheeler on the hit TV series stranger things and Richie Tozier that movie series.
my take: I’m a big fan of Jesse Eisenberg’s acting career (zombieland, social networks)so it will be interesting to see how he steers the film.

After Love (2020)
evaluation: none
release date: Coming to select theaters on Friday, January 20, 2023.
overview: After, Love Set in the English port city of Dover, Mary (Joanna Scanlan) mourns the loss of her beloved husband, Ahmed. Mary searched her wallet and found her ID card of a French woman. It’s a secret Ahmed kept just her 21 miles across the English Channel in Calais.
Things to watch out for: Joanna Scanlan wins Best Actress at the 2022 BAFTA Awards.
street language: The film was a big hit on the film festival circuit, winning awards at Cannes and Dublin.
my take: I’ve heard from fellow film critics that Joanna Scanlan’s acting is magical.
